First time volunteers
Dear Friends and Family,
I am writing to ask that you thoughtfully and prayerfully consider supporting an upcoming mission team to Guatemala that I will be participating in through Refuge International.
On [insert date of trip] I will be joining a team of surgeons, nurses, anesthetists and others who will embark on a weeklong journey to provide much needed care to the impoverished people of Guatemala. The patients we will care for are only able to receive medical treatment through medical mission groups like ours, as there is very little access to healthcare throughout the country.
I am asking for your thoughts and prayers as I travel, and for a monetary donation to Refuge International. Refuge International brings medical, dental and surgical supplies, equipment and services to the poor people of Guatemala. It is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from individuals as their primary source of funding.
As a volunteer, I will be paying for my own airfare, room and board, but there are many other expenses in providing medical care to the poor in Guatemala. Money is needed to buy medical and surgical supplies and provide food and housing for patients who come to the United States who cannot receive treatment through the Saul Project through Refuge International. Clean water projects also need funding to help provide clean water for villages throughout Guatemala.
If you are able to make a donation, you may either return your check in the envelope provided, writing my name and trip description [site and date], or donate online at www.refugeinternational.com.
Help be a part of changing the world, one person, one village at a time with your donation to Refuge International. For more information, please visit www.refugeinternational.com.
Returning volunteers, sample letter
Dear Friends and Family,
I will be returning to Guatemala on (include dates) to work in a remote village providing care for the poorest of the poor who are badly in need of medical and surgical care. I will be going with a group called Refuge International. I worked with this group (last year, 2 years ago?), working in (describe your duties on your previous trip). This year, I feel called to return and help. I will pay my own travel, food and lodging. Money donated through the Change the World program covers the cost of the work done in Guatemala.
Few have access to health care in Guatemala, and medical missions such as the one I will be participating in reach out to Guatemalans in remote areas.
If you feel inclined to donate to Refuge International, go to www.refugeinternational.com and donate through PayPal. Mail-in donations can be sent to:
P.O. Box 3586
Longview, TX 75606-3586
Please include my name.

I am going to Guatemala as a missionary on ______. I have been on Refuge trips since_______. [or, "This is my first trip with Refuge."] While we are there, our mission team will provide the poor in Guatemala with much-needed health care.
I’d like to tell you about Refuge International, the organization that is organizing this trip. Refuge is a 10-year-old nonprofit corporation. It was started in 2003 by a handful of people and has grown into an organization with more than 500 volunteers from around the U.S. Each volunteer pays their own way, gives a week of their time, and uses their talents to help the people of Guatemala.
Last year, Refuge International volunteers performed close to 400 surgeries, and treated over 3,000 people in the rural villages in Guatemala. Water projects provided clean water for remote villages off the Sarstun River through water filter distribution. Refuge continues to fund a hospital clinic 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Refuge distributed 4 million tablets of Albendazole (deworming medication) to the schoolchildren of Guatemala. It was a record-breaking year and quite a blessing for the poor in Guatemala. Every time I get back home, I feel we need to do more. We have so much and they have nothing. [You can leave this off if you have not been on a mission trip before.]
I am writing to you in hopes you will support our medical mission team with a gift to Refuge International in support of the work we will do in Guatemala. I know your donation will go to a very worthy cause, providing medical care and clean water to the poor in Guatemala. Plus, it is tax deductible!
Refuge International counts on donations from individuals to pay for medical supplies, equipment, patient care, and transportation. Many of the medicines and supplies used by the teams are donated, but many supplies have to be purchased. They can be expensive.
Refuge International would love to share what they are doing to serve the poor in Guatemala through their ministry. The hope, love and compassion they show to those who need health care is such a blessing to so many in need.
Please enclose your gift in an envelope to Refuge International at PO Box 3586, Longview, Texas 75606-3586. It is very important to write my name on the bottom of your check so that I’ll know you responded and can thank you. If you would like to save time, you may give online at www.refugeinternational.com. I will be going to _______ on _______ [date and place of your mission trip].
Thanks for your support of Refuge’s work in Guatemala!
