Hiway 80 Rescue Mission, Longview, Texas
No Passport Required
Up until late 2009, if you wanted to volunteer with Refuge International, you needed a passport. But now, Refuge has joined forces with the physicians at Longview Emergency Medicine Associates and nursing faculty & students at The University of Texas at Tyler to provide medical assistance to the homeless population who lodge at Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.
The Clinic at Hiway 80 has been operational for many years under the tireless leadership of Dr. Brian King, an Emergency Medicine physician in Longview. Since September, Refuge International has been utilizing its experience in clinic operations and volunteer management to work with LEMA. The partnership has been a success, and the clinic now sees up to 40 patients in a 3 hour window.
Skills of all types are needed in the clinic. Nurse Practitioners and physicians are the primary healthcare providers. Nurses are utilized for intake and medication education. Individuals who have no healthcare experience are also needed to help clients complete medical forms and prescription applications as well as typical office management/clerical work.
The clinic is located at the Shelter site and is open every 2nd and 4th Wednesday, 3pm - 6pm.
